Scarecrow Costume

Actually, it's quite easy. Here's what you will need.
  • old trousers, a shirt that has seen better days or an old jacket if you need warmth.
  • raffia or wool... for the straw
  • brown paper bag, crumpled for the mask
  • crayons or marker to decorate mask
1. Gently crumple the paper bag and then draw where the eyes will be. Cut out. Using crayons or marker, color in features as desired.

2. Glue raffia or wool to the top of the bag to resemble hair.

2. Once bag is on head and the eye openings are sufficient, secure the neck area with string or tape in place.

3. Pull on the pants, shirt or jacket. If you have time, a few patches make the costume look even better.

4. A bit of wool dangling out of the pant cuffs and sleeves looks just like straw but is a little softer than raffia... but the choice is yours.

6. A floppy brimmed hat similar to what Jed Clampet would have worn will complete your costume. Now go and have fun.

How to Make Fake Blood for Halloween

I love this post from wikiHow on how to make fake blood for Halloween. This is the best mix of recipes I've seen so far because it shows you a non-toxic version, a toxic (more authentic) Hollywood movie set version, an edible version for cakes, splatter blood (ha!) and even blood for art.

Here's my friend Susan's version of non-toxic blood that I'll be using this year for my Tippi Hedren from "The Birds" costume:

  • Arrowroot powder (or corn starch, but Arrowroot makes for a less clumpy mixture)
  • white corn syrup
  • water
  • basic red and blue food coloring (green works too if you don't have blue)

Start with a cup of corn syrup in a bowl. Stir in a tablespoon of Arrowroot powder or cornstarch. Slowly add in water (up to 1/3 cup) until you get the perfect consistency of blood. This is your base.

To add the dye, add a few drops of red food coloring, stirring it in until you have a bright red color. Add a couple drops of blue or green food color to make the "blood" look more authentic. Set aside to thicken, then apply to face, clothes or body. Warning: This fake blood will stain clothing!

The Benefits of Powder & Foundation Primer

This week I stopped by Sephora to stock up on some of my favorite beauty products. It was at the Laura Mercier section that I learned there's actually a primer for powders. Who knew? The primer works by filling in pores and fine lines and wrinkles so the powder doesn't settle in. Turns out Laura Mercier has a mineral primer specially formulated for women who wear powder. It's pictured here. Buy it online.

My first step in my beauty routine is to apply a tinted sunscreen, so a foundation primer works best for me. Laura Mercier makes an excellent one. Buy it online.

How to Apply False Eyelashes

My best friend Deirdre made a documentary on burlesque and has been heavily involved in Seattle's burlesque scene for some years now, so she knows everything there is to know about fake eyelashes. She reports the cheapie ones at the drugstore work just as well as the $20 ones at department stores and it simply takes practice to master the application.

With Halloween around the corner, here's how to apply false eyelashes so they look as natural as possible.

Halloween 2011: Hair & Makeup Ideas I Fell For

Halloween is still a couple weeks away, but it's time to start thinking about your costume. Don't be like me and wait until the night before to pull together your costume (although this year I'll be in India for Halloween and I doubt they celebrate the holiday there, ha!).

Wedding Makeup

If Kate Middleton can do her own makeup for her wedding, I suppose the rest of us can, too. Unless, of course, you have never worn makeup in your life, in which case you might ask a friend to help you out. In the meantime, I racked my brain for my most awesome wedding day makeup tips and came up with these:

The Key is To Look Like Yourself, Only Better

It was widely reported that Kate Middleton chose to do her own wedding makeup because she wanted William to recognize her as she walked down the aisle. If you wear little makeup in your regular life, your wedding day is not the day to try out a smokey eye. You should look like you, only enhanced. The same rule holds true if you are a huge makeup junkie like Kim Kardashian. When she walked down the aisle at her 2011 wedding in a full face of makeup, she still looked like Kim Kardashian.

You Know That Friend Of Yours Who Really Knows Makeup? Ask Her for Help

When my friend Heather got engaged a couple years ago, she asked me to help her figure out her makeup. (I have to admit, I was like, "really? Me?") Together, we went to Henri Bendel in New York City and I pointed out the makeup products I felt Heather would love including my favorite eye shadow (Dior, always Dior, nothing is as lush as Dior). At every station, Heather sat down with a makeup expert and tried out the product. I hit a homerun: she learned how to use each product, she bought everything I suggested (no commission for me!), and she looked AMAZING at her wedding. More on what I told her to buy in a bit.

Another option is to ask your friend to do your makeup. I recommend a practice run a week or so before the big day.

If you're doing your own makeup, don't miss How to Apply Makeup.

The Most Important Part of Your Makeup: Your Skin Tone

It doesn't matter how big your eyes are or how glossy your lips look, if your skin looks blotchy or oily, you won't look your best on your wedding day. Your first priority should be making sure your skin looks great, then move on to your eyes, cheeks and lips.

Everything you need to know about getting your skin to look great are in these 2 articles:

Pick Your Eyes or Your Mouth

A basic rule of makeup is to either play up your eyes or your mouth. Play up both and you risk looking like a clown. So if you decide to go all-out on your eye makeup, keep your lips light with a gloss or a light pink lipstick. If you want to play up your full lips, do so with a bright or deep color, but keep your eyes relatively light.

This is the Day to Whip Out the Eyelash Curler

Unless you're one of those people with such amazingly long eyelashes you are regularly asked if you use Latisse, you'll benefit from an eyelash curler. Curling lashes will make your eyes "pop." I like to heat my eyelash curler for 3 seconds with a blowdryer before I curl my lashes. Just be sure to test the curler first on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot.

Some women with super short eyelashes go the false lashes route. I'd advise getting them professionally done, but some of my friends are really good at applying their own and swear it's super easy. See False Lashes: How to Apply Them.

Two Words: Waterproof. Mascara.

Perhaps you will be in that 5 percent of women who don't tear up at some point at their wedding, but if you're not, today is the day to whip out the waterproof mascara. And ask your maid of honor to carry a tissue for you. Also, if you have light skin and blonde hair, don't wear black mascara, brown is your better bet.

Prime, Prime, Prime

Just as you would prime a wall before you paint, you should prime your face before you apply anything powder-based. I swear by eyeshadow primers -- nothing, and I mean NOTHING works better to keep your shadow from melting into your eyelid crease. (See Keep Eyeshadow in Place for Hours). I use a primer every single time I wear eyeshadow. If you're wearing foundation or tinted moisturizer, apply primer beforehand. Primer fills in pores and fine lines and you'll find your foundation glides on effortlessly.

Invest in a Highlighter Pen

One of the products I recommended to Heather was Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Concealer, the makeup artist's secret. Although it's called a concealer, it's really a highlighter. Trust me, nothing brightens the face more.

Apply a bit under the eyes, above the brow, in the creases of the jowls (along your nose) and under the chin. Pat in with the pad of your finger. One great tip is to look in the mirror with your chin down. Apply Touche Eclat to the dark, shadowed spaces.

There are many highlighters on the market. Read more about the wonders of highlighters in my Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat review.

The Trick to Keeping Lipstick in Place

Who has time to apply lipstick or gloss every half hour when they have 200 guests to entertain?

I took Heather by the Chanel section to show her Chanel's long-wearing lipstick, Chanel Ultra Wear Lip Color (read my review), which she loved. Once you put this stuff on, it's like a stain and doesn't budge. The problem is there aren't too many colors, so if you don't LOVE the shade, you can try this 3-step process using any liner and color:

  • The morning of the wedding, exfoliate lips by slathering them with Vaseline. Scrub them in a circular motion with an old toothbrush.
  • When you apply makeup, fill in lips with a lip liner.
  • Apply lipstick or gloss over this. The lip liner is key to keeping color locked in place.
  • Keep your lip liner close at hand so you can refresh your lips a few times during the evening. Better yet, put one of your bridesmaids in charge of lipstick/gloss duty.

Thou Shalt Not Wax the Day Before Your Wedding

You may be able to cover up a red upper lip or brow with a thick concealer, but trust me the redness will wear through at some point. It's best to wax no less than 48 hours before a big event.

The same goes for your bikini line. Unless you get regular bikini waxes and know how your skin reacts, give yourself at least 48 hours before your wedding to get a bikini wax or Brazilian or risk walking down the aisle with Talcum powder liberally applied to the inside of your thighs.

If you're a newbie at waxing, take 2 Ibuprofen at least an hour before your appointment. The more waxings you get, the less painful they are.

For more details see, The "Brazilian Wax" (Or, What to Expect When You Sign Up to Get One).

Oily Skin? Carry Blotting Sheets

To keep your oily skin at bay, definitely set your makeup with a loose powder before you walk down the aisle, but don't keep overpowdering skin as the day and night wear on. Instead, carry blotting papers. This way you don't have to keep powdering your face all night long. The blotting papers soak up the oils leaving your makeup in place.

Don't Go Overboard With the Fake Tan

If you like the tanned look, get a spray tan or at least use a self-tanner you know works. If you're new to fake tanning, be careful because the orange look on your wedding day is not cool. Also, self-tanners reek (find out why). You don't want to reek on your wedding day.

See How to Fake a Summer Tan.

Say "I Do" to a Classic Manicure and Pedicure

Personally I hate French manicures and pedicures (I wrote a blog about it in May 2006 and to this day get comments from people who either vehemently agree or disagree with me). I also loathe long, fake acrylic nails. A classic look for a wedding is a soft pink.

On the other hand, I always wince when I'm told a bride is not going to paint her nails for her wedding (my friends tend to be the laid-back, no-frills sort, so this happens to me sometimes). Even if you have no interest in painting your fingernails (I can't imagine you'd be reading this article if you're that sort, but who knows?), at least get them professionally shaped and ask to have them "buffed." As for your toes, a pedicure will make you feel spiffy even if the only person to see your toes on your wedding day is your husband.

Exfoliate in the Weeks Up to the Wedding

To make sure your skin looks its best, exfoliate your face and neck once or twice a week a couple months before the wedding. You can make your own facial scrub by mixing a generic white sugar with coconut oil, grapeseed oil or even olive oil or you can buy one. See my list of the best facial scrubs.

The days before your wedding, I always recommend treating yourself to a professional facial (give yourself at least 48 hours for the skin to calm down) or do your own at home. It's easier than you'd think. See How To Do The Basic At-Home Facial.

A Word About Teeth Whitening

One of the best investments I made was professional teeth whitening at my dentist's office years ago. I still have white teeth. There are a bunch of over-the-counter teeth whiteners that work, too. (People also swear by Crest Strips). Just be careful not to go too overboard with teeth whitening. Chiclet-white teeth looks unnatural.

Pack the Deodorant

You may find you are so excited or nervous that your sweat glands go into overdrive. If you're the sweaty sort, pack baby wipes and deodorant on your wedding day. Why the baby wipes? It's best not to apply deodorant to moist skin. Wipe your armpits with a baby wipe first, let it dry and then re-apply deodorant.

Just Say No to the Gum

Another good item to pack is breath strips. Today is not the day to be chewing gum or sucking on mints.

Finally, A Quick Tip About Your Hair

Stylists always talk about how dirty hair makes the best updos. To this I say, "Gross." If you are like me and you can't bear to show up on your wedding day with dirty hair, try the hair stylist secret and ask your stylist to use baby powder or dry shampoo to give hair that "dirty" texture so needed for an updo.

And don't forget to pack extra hairspray and pins. My updo fell in the middle of my senior prom and I couldn't do a thing about it. To ensure you don't get caught in the same position as me (or in a downpour), make sure you're prepared.

Loose Skin? How to Conceal Sagging Skin

You've heard the old quote attributed to Catherine Deneuve, "When you get older, you have to be ready to trade your ass for your face." If you have sagging skin, you don't have to run off to a plastic surgeon. Here are my favorite tricks and tips that, unlike a facelift, cost little or nothing.

How to Downplay Jowls

I have friends in their 30s with jowls. This is what happens when you have loose skin or fatty deposits under your chin. To get rid of this permanently, you would need a professions to either perform lipo on your chin if you have fatty deposits or Botox shots can help, too.

But you don't have to run off a doctor. There are much cheaper ways to conceal saggy jowls.

The answer here lies in jewelry selection. Stay away from chokers and short necklaces which draw eyes straight to the jawline. Bring up the eye by wearing gorgeous earrings instead.

How to Conceal a Crepe-y Neck

When it comes to crepe-y necks, it's all about bobs, but longer than the chin-length ones. A bob that hits just below the chin will draw attention away from your neck.

You want to avoid longer cuts because they attract the eye downward, according to stylist John Barrett in the November 2007 issue of O magazine.

Also, consider wearing scarves wrapped several times around the neck. Very European.

Get inspired by Celebrities Over 50 With Gorgeous Hair.

The Right Way to Apply Blush

Don't apply blush to the apples of your cheeks or you risk looking like a clown. Instead, choose a rosy blush and using a large fluffy brush, sweep color over the highest point of your cheekbones. Start about an inch in from the nose.

Create the Allusion of Youth

Dewy skin is always youthful. Because aging skin tends to be dry, skip the powders and opt instead for liquid foundation and creamy blush. Pat skin with a pea-sized amount of moisturizer after makeup application to create "dewy skin." See 20 Foundation, Concealer & Blush Tips That Will Change Your Life.

Faith Lawless Interview

Faith Lawless, About.com's Makeup Guide, has trained with some of today's top makeup lines including Chanel, Lancome, Estee Lauder, and Clinique. Her Website (check it out here) is an incredible resource not only for makeup tips and product reviews, but for daily and weekly product deals. Faith recently sat down to answer a few of my burning questions. Here's our interview:

Julyne: When they find out I write about beauty, people tend to ask me (with glee in their eyes) if I love getting free products. Personally, I don’t because I’m much more interested in what’s tried-and-true. I’ve never been a product junkie. What about you?

Faith: I’m very picky about the free products I receive. First there is only so much time during the week to truly test a product, and second I don’t like to test a product just because it’s being pushed by a company. Most of my products are from the lines that I find most reliable, but I have been given a new product that has surprised me from time to time.

What makeup products/brands do you swear by?

I use many different lines, and it depends on the color and my mood for the day. My all-time fave brands, however, include Too Faced, Estee Lauder, Koh Gen Do and Everyday Minerals. My new favorite product is Nails Inc. Magnetic Nail Polish. It’s so fun and addictive, and the ending result looks like instant nail art.

What about skincare?

My normal day cream is either L’Oreal or Estee Lauder, and my night cream is natural grapeseed oil from Whole Foods. Recently I’ve been using a little-known line called Reviva Labs, who makes products that contain DMAE. I love their DMAE Firming Fluid and Firming Eye Serum. Let’s just say the DMAE has worked wonders to put the elasticity back in my 30-something skin!

What’s in your purse right now?

What’s not in my purse is the better question. Some of the things that I know are in there include Origins Peace of Mind, Benefit Ooh La Lift, Estee Lauder Lip Liner in Tea Rose, Aveda Lip Shine in Pomelo, two Estee Lauder Pure Color Glosses in Electric Violet and Electric Coral, Smith’s Rose Bud Salve, Colgate Wisp, Wet Ones, Advil and Sudafed and a big container of LifeSavers Pep-o-mints.

Can you share a few of your favorite beauty tips?

I use my mineral makeup to set my liquid foundation. It gives me better coverage, and the foundation tends to wear longer. My other favorite tip is how to remove any nail polish shade from carpet. I had a big incident when my son was 2 years old, with dark blue glitter nail polish on light carpet.

Editor's note: Faith explains how to get nail polish out of light carpet in her article, How do I Remove Nail Polish from my Carpet?.

My style icon is Alexa Chung because she’s so effortless yet well put-together and she sets trends that actually look timeless. I want her legs. Who are your style icons?

I would have to say my favorite style icon would be Angelina Jolie. She’s one of those people that you either love or you hate. Personally I love how she always looks terrific, even with a kid or two on her hip. Her iconic lips are the best, but I also love how her makeup is always simple and classic while also accenting her eyes with a good eyeliner. This is my favorite Angelina look.

What makeup mistake do you see a lot of women making? (For me, it’s French pedicures -- can’t stand them)

There are two big mistakes:

  1. The wrong color foundation. There are a lot of women walking around with the foundation “mask” look. This is an easy fix with either a lighter shade or by adding moisturizer or white primer to their existing foundation.
  2. Bad liquid eyeliner applications. Liquid eyeliner isn’t for everyone, and it shows when you’re wearing it and it looks like your 2-yr old applied your eyeliner with a marker. My advice is if you can’t get the look right with a liquid pen or gel liner, then use a kohl eyeliner or an flat eyeliner brush dipped in wet eyeshadow.

One of my most controversial blog posts was actually when I called French pedicures tacky. People still comment on that post today. What was the most controversial makeup topic you’ve had on your site?

I did a blog post on how I can’t stand Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dry nail color. In my defense I have literally tried dozens and dozens of brands and formulas of nail polish, and I just don’t like this one. Needless to say my readers didn’t agree, and one reader actually suggested that I don’t know how to apply nail polish. I can see her point, but it still didn’t change my mind and neither have the emails. Here's the post, "Say No to New Sally Hansen Nail Polish."

As a makeup writer, you have access to the very best stuff on the market. So tell me, do you buy any beauty products at the drugstore?

I do! I don’t get every single piece of makeup sent to me, and I don’t always like the products sent. Two of my favorite drugstore lines are Rimmel and NYC. I love Rimmel’s brow pencil and NYC’s lip liners. Other than that I’m always looking for something “worthwhile” when I’m out and about looking for deals.

What products do you feel are most worth the splurge?

If I had to choose one I would say foundation or mineral makeup. Most of the makeup products can easily be purchased on the “deal” side, and are equally as good. For example I love CoverGirl’s NatureLuxe Foundation, but if I want a foundation that works with my skin and that does more, then I reach for a department store brand such as Too Faced. Mineral makeup is more on the true splurge side, especially since many of the “deal” mineral makeups contain not-so-good-for-you ingredients. Check out my review of CoverGirl’s NatureLuxe Foundation.

There are so many wonderful beauty blogs these days. Which ones do you follow religiously?

There is one blog that I absolutely love called Vintage or Tacky. Cora has a knack for some really great, mind-blowing eye looks. I also read the Spoiled Pretty blog from Daneen, and JennySue's makeup blog. Spoiled Pretty covers a lot of really trendy and fun products, and JennySue lets her hair down as “a mom with a makeup problem." I can definitely relate to her!

What to Expect When You Get a Brazilian Wax

The Brazilian bikini wax has been in the United States ever since a group of sisters from Brazil introduced the concept to New Yorkers around 1987. Brazilian women, famous for their thong bikinis, have been waxing everything for years. The practice is common for Americans in big cities, too. Before you bite the bullet and schedule a Brazilian, find out what really happens in The "Brazilian Wax" (Or, What to Expect When You Sign Up to Get One).

Review of Bare Escentuals’ Purely Nourishing Moisturizer

Contributing writer Sue Costello has sensitive skin, and she's very particular, so when she gave her thumbs up to Bare Escentuals' bareMinerals Purely Nourishing Moisturizer for Combination Skin (read her review here), I had to tell you all about it.

You see, Sue doesn't write about just any product. She only reviews the stuff she feels you should know about. The reason I have her write for me is she didn't like any of the products on one of my "best of" lists and she wrote to me about a year ago to tell me so. None of them worked for her sensitive skin, she said. OK, I said, let's have you test some of the purported best products on the market for sensitive skin and if you like something, you can review it. You get to try fun products and my readers get to hear about the best stuff for sensitive skin.

Sue, a professional writer and editor, was game.

Sue is busy trying out a bunch of products and when she's gotten a bunch of reviews written, I'll cobble them together into a "best of" list for you sensitive skin types.

A win-win, I'd say.

How to Properly Remove Your Makeup

I wash my face and take off my eye makeup every night and have been doing this my entire life. I have good skin, but there's really no way of knowing if it's because I remove my makeup properly each night. I'm sure there are women with fabulous skin who fall asleep in foundation, concealer and sunscreen every night, their eyes caked in shadow and mascara.

In any case, it's definitely best for your skin, your lashes and the tender skin around your eyes to remove your makeup and cleanse your skin each evening. To find out how to do this correctly, check out my new article, "How to Remove Your Makeup: Pro Tips From Beauty Experts."

Holiday Beauty

Holiday parties are just around the corner and to get you ready to go from work to cocktail party, here is a holiday makeup tips interview I recently sat for.

What are the hottest makeup trends to watch this holiday season?

Two looks are classic and hot right now: The smokey, shimmery eye paired with light lips and the deep red lips balanced with a light eye. Shimmer is in this year, as it was last year, and it's the perfect festive look as long as you don't overload on the shimmer.

Can you recommend any specific lines or products that are very in for this season?

Primers are a must this season for both face and eye makeup. Primers go on before foundation or eye shadow and keep makeup in place for hours. They also fill in fine lines and skin imperfections so your tinted moisturizer goes on smoothly. Also this year, skip the foundation and try a tinted moisturizer which is much more light and gives a dewy finish, which is very sexy. Laura Mercier makes a near perfect primer and tinted moisturizer, though I've found the color tone I bought in summer is already too dark for winter!

Work makeup is, in general, pretty conservative. What can a woman do to punch up her look without taking it all off and starting over? (i.e. with lip makeup? Eye makeup? Blush?)

Transitioning from work to evening is actually pretty easy if you prep yourself. Apply tinted moisturizer (or foundation), mascara and gloss or lipstick before work. After work, cover any blemishes by patting in a concealer (never rub). Then follow these steps for either the smokey eye look or the deep red look:

For the Smokey Eye
1. Apply your eye makeup: Eyeliner on both top and bottom lashes (be sure to 'smudge it,' dark eyeliner will age you), a eye shadow primer (I like MAC Paints), and a shimmery shadow on the lid. Don't apply any more mascara unless your earlier application has rubbed completely off, otherwise you risk getting clumpy lashes.
2. Dab a shimmery blush to cheeks (I love Bobbi Brown's creamy blushes which also works as lipstick).
3. Powder your face lightly.
4. Apply a light lipstick or gloss.

For Deep Red Lips
1. Cover unsightly veins on eyelids with a matte eyeshadow in a color that's as close as your skin tone as possible (such as beige).
2. Apply a very light shimmery blush on cheeks.
3. Line lips and fill in with your favorite red color.
4. Powder face.

What different kinds of makeup should a woman wear to a chatty cocktail party, as opposed to a high-class late-night party?
For the high-class party: Apply more shimmer or go deeper with the red lipstick.

How can women wear these party looks without their makeup looking costume-ish?
The number 1 rule of thumb: Never play up BOTH the eyes and the mouth.

What can women to do make sure that the makeup they are wearing for a good 16 hours (8am-midnight) keeps looking fresh and clean?
Primer is key here. Women should prime their skin before applying foundation or tinted moisturizer (again, Laura Mercier has a great primer) and they should prime their eyes before applying shadow. Also, carry oil-blotting papers if you tend to get greasy, holiday food can be very rich. MAC has some great ones. It's better to blot the oil than to keep applying powder, which can give you a cake-y appearance.

Do you have knowledge of hair? What can women do to go from office professional hairstyles to party glam in a snap?

For hair, here are some suggestions:

1. For straight, medium-length hair, I suggest washing hair and blowing it 2/3rds dry in the morning, then twisting it into a low bun (a few unkept strands are very sexy). Undo hair before the party -- you'll have gorgeous waves. Spray with a purse-size hair spray. You could also do the opposite: Blow hair dry and wear it down during the day, then twist it into a sophisticated bun for the evening. A few ends popping out is very in right now.

2. For curly, long-ish hair, an 'unkept updo' is very sexy for parties. Let hair airdry in the morning, twisting ringlets in place with fingers. After work, pull hair up in a modern version of a French twist or messy bun. Another option is to pull hair on the sides back and clip in place with a fancy clip. This gives shows off your long curly locks, but accentuates the face as well.

> 3. For short hair, curl hair in the morning then freshen curls before the evening with a curling iron. Spray hair before you go out. You can do this in your office bathroom. Don't have access to a curling iron? Add body by back combing and hold it in place with a bit of hairspray. You can also accessorize with a headband.

My Interview With About.com's Guide to Makeup

I absolutely love to read about other beauty writer's and blogger's favorite products and beauty tips. This week, I got the chance to ask Faith Lawless, About.com's Guide to Makeup, about her beauty secrets. She shares her favorite product of the moment (hint: it's magnetic), the products she buys at the drugstore and what you'd find in her purse now (I'm amazed at her makeup collection, I just carry lip gloss in my purse).

Check out my Interview With Faith Lawless, About.com's Guide to Makeup and definitely check out her makeup Website.

Can You Get Away With Platinum Hair?

So you're thinking of going platinum (your hair, not your album). Before you attempt to bleach your hair, make sure you will actually look good with platinum hair. Here are some guidelines to follow.

Gallery: 17 Photos of Gorgeous Platinum Hair.

  1. Try on a platinum colored wig first. A good way to try on hair colors is to test them first via a wig. If you look good in a platinum wig, you'll look even better with your own hair bleached.
  2. Women with cool skin tones generally look better in platinum colors than women with warm skin tones. Cool skin tones tend to be ruddy, not golden. If you have a pink or peachy complexion with pink or blue skin undertones, and you tend to burn before you tan, you've got cool skin tone. Women with warm skin tones have a yellow or golden skin undertones and tend to tan more easily. There are some women with olive skin tones who look good in any color (think Linda Evangelista or Gwen Stefani), so if you do have warm skin, try on the wig and see for yourself if you can pull it off.
  3. If you tan easily, think twice. "If you are too tan it usually looks trashy," says celebrity colorist David John to Totalbeauty.com. If you do have warm skin tones, stay out of the sun. Paler skin works better with this hair color.
  4. Were you blonde as a kid? As we age, our hair tends to turn darker, but women who were blonde as children tend to make good blondes.
  5. If you have naturally dark hair, keep in mind that platinum hair will be high maintenance for you. Your roots will grow in dark, which could look tacky next to your blonde hair, so make sure your committed to the hair color before you make the plunge.
  6. Brittle, fragile hair will not be able to withstand the chemicals required to achieve that perfect platinum color. If your hair has been chemically straightened or colored recently, consult with your stylist about the condition of your hair. You can ask your stylist to condition your hair before each step in the process to protect your hair from the harmful chemicals.
  7. Women with dark hair may have to endure a few visits to the salon before they're hair becomes true platinum. Because hair must endure bleach and toner, going platinum is a multi-step process that may take a couple visits to the salon.

"If you go too light, too fast, your hair can get dry and damaged, which isn't pretty regardless of your hair color," says colorist Eric Muroski in Glamour Magazine. "You may need several visits to the salon to get the shade you're looking for. So be patient, heed your colorist's advice, and move at the pace they recommend."

  8. Bring in a picture to the salon of the exact platinum color you love. Platinum hair color may mean something else to your stylist than it does to you, so bring in a picture to show him or her.

Yes, Some Women Pay $650 for Moisturizer

With fall on the way, it's time to stock up on moisturizer. While you can get a perfectly good moisturizer in the drugstore aisle, some women insist on pure luxury. For a whopping $650, you can enjoy the benefits of Kanebo Senai Premier The Cream daily (check it out here). Why so pricey? It boasts 15 active ingredients which I won't bother listing here.

But if you're like me, you're more likely to spend about $10 on a great body moisturizer. See my list of the best moisturizers on the market.
