The Bottom Line
I would disagree with Susan, even though this is my all-time favorite mascara. It's not going to be for everyone for reasons I outline below.
Bottom line: Try before you buy. Ask for Definicils at a Lancome counter and wear it a day before committing to purchase.
Pros
- Doesn't clump
- Lengthens lashes
- Doesn't come off with water/tears
- No need to use a lash comb to separate
Cons
- At $23, this mascara is pricey
- You can't buy it at the drugstore or grocery store
- Goes on very wet so could come off initially on your lids
- Tendency to flake
Description
- Goes on light, separates lashes nicely
- Adds length, but is not a volumizer
- Available in a waterproof version
Guide Review - Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara
One con, and the reason is doesn't get five stars from me, is its tendency to flake. I find a mascara primer helps (I use Lancome's Cils Booster).
One important note: Definicils is a lengthening mascara, not a volumizer. If you are looking for volume you might prefer a volumizing mascara like Lancome's Fatale. If you want separation and length, then you won't find a better mascara than Definicils.
How to add volume with this mascara: A trick of the trade is to start with a couple swipes of a lengthening mascara and follow immediately with a couple brushes of a volumizing mascara.
What do others say about Definicils?
Self-described 'cosmetics cop' Paula Begoun made it a "Paula's Pick" in her book, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me." She also gives it $$$, which means she finds the product pricey and there are other mascaras out there that will do the job for less money.
At the time of this review, more than 350 users rated Lancome Defincils on Makeupalley.com. It scored 3.7 out of 5 "lippies" and 58% reported they would buy it again. Most women either absolutely loved it and swore it was the mascara they come back to time and time again, or they hated it mainly because they were disappointed it didn't add volume. Some complained of clumping, which I have not experienced.
