How to Make a Manicure Last During Your Summer Vacation
Jul 30th 2011, 05:36

I have been traveling for weeks and got my last mani/pedi on July 10. My pedicure has lasted beautifully but my manicure started to fall apart about a week after I got it and I hate the way nail polish looks when it's peeling.

So what did I do to prepare for the vacation? I didn't want to do my own nails (too lazy!) and I didn't want to spend valuable vacation time in a salon, so I carried a nail polish wipe in my makeup bag. Cutex makes them in little towelette form and I keep them in my purse for those moments when my manicure is peeling and I find myself in the middle of Manhattan (or Bermuda). Also, I got a light pink nail polish color (Essie's Montauk the End, my favorite) so the peeling wasn't so noticeable. Carrying these has been a blessing. This past February, they came in handy when a woman on a tour with me found herself with a peeling manicure in the middle of Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Check out my 30 Best Manicure Tips for more advice on how to make a mani last longer and much more.

My Top 12 List of Beauty Products
Jul 29th 2011, 10:01

I'm Rosemary Timmons, a light-haired, high school freshman. I've been wearing bright red lipstick since I was 7, and have always been obsessed with beauty and fashion. Since I started modeling for one of the country's largest agencies, I've had to find fantastic go-to beauty products. These are my 12 top-shelf faves that are great for teens.

Best Lip Color: L’Oréal Infalliable Never Fail Lipcolour Stars Collection

This is the best lip gloss ever, I’m just going to come out and say it. Not only does it come in a bunch of really pretty colors like Diane’s Tuberose, Beyonce’s Red, and Kate’s Plum, BUT IT DOESN’T COME OFF. I put the gloss on in the morning, performed in a play, went swimming with my friends, took a shower, ate lunch, went to a party, and by the end of the day it was still on (and I never had to re-apply!). It’s a two-part system where first you apply the color and then when it’s dry, you apply the glossy sealant. About $9.99 at any basic drugstore.

Best Blush/Bronzer: benefit’s Box O’ Powder

I simply adore benefit’s boxed bronzers/blushes. I own “CORALista” (it gives you a tropical glow) and here’s the fun thing: it smells great! It’s currently my favorite line because the powders come in really great colors (brightening “dandelion,” peachy “georgia,” and blushing “thrrrob,” to name a few) and they make your cheeks smell fruitlicious! About $28 online or at Sephora.

Best Eyeshadow: MAC’s Carbon Eye Shadow in Intense Black (Matte)

This is the blackest, black eye shadow. Just looking at this eyeshadow is like looking into a black hole! I like to use it as a smoothing and matte-ing technique on top of my liquid eyeliner, but when wetted it doubles as a liquid eyeliner. Even when I have been wearing this all day and rubbing my eyes, it still remains darker than most other brands. About $14.50 at department store MAC counters or a bit cheaper online.

Best Drugstore Eyeshadow: Maybelline Silk Eyeshadow in "Give Me Gold"

This is best drugstore eyeshadow I have found. Unlike a lot of eyeshadows that look amazing in their packaging but look pale once you apply them, this product looks as bright and vivid when applied as it does in the container. It comes with a palette of 4 eyeshadows and instructions on the back of the box that outline exactly how to use the colors, taking the guess work out of the artistry of eyeshadow. About $6.98 at any drugstore or grocery store.

Best Eyeshadow Primer: URBAN DECAY Eyeshadow Primer Potion

This eyeshadow primer is definitely one of my go-to products. It makes all of my cheap shadows "pop" and intensify, and it makes my more pricey shadows look simply a-mazing! And with just a light coat on your eyelid, it prevents your eyeshadow from creasing. About $18 online or at Sephora.

Best Mascara: Maybelline New York Great Lash

Great Lash is the most sold mascara for a reason. For a super-affordable price, it lengthens and thickens your eyelashes without any clumps. And since mascaras should be replaced monthly, there is no point in buying a more expensive one that does the same job. About $4.24 at Walmart or any drugstore.

Best Concealer: MAC's Select Cover-up

This does everything concealer should do, and does it wonderfully. MAC touts it as “liquid camouflage for the skin,” which is true, covering every little imperfection but you can’t tell you’re wearing any cover-up. It’s also pretty resistant and lasts a long time. About $16.50 at MAC department counters.

Compare Prices

Best Drugstore Concealer: Almay Clear Complexion Concealer

This concealer is super lightweight, covers imperfections well, and you can’t tell you are wearing it. It’s the best drugstore concealer I have ever tried, however, I first tried it in the summer and by the end of winter, I tried to use it again but my skin was so pale I had to buy a different color to match my skin and it didn’t seem to work as well. So I will conclude that it looks best on slightly darker skin. About $7.72 at Walmart or basic drugstores.

Best Lip Balm: Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm

BURT’S BEES® Tinted lip balms look great on EVERYONE at ANY age. This lip balm is a quadruple threat: it smells great, it tingles your lips pleasantly; it moisturizes your lips; and it gives your lips a bright pop of color without looking overdone. I always carry it in my bag because it’s not so intense that it’s inappropriate for school, but it also works well for fancy time. About $7 in drugstores.

MAC’s Powerpoint Eye Pencil (in Stubborn Brown)

I like to use this eyeliner to line the upper waterline of my eye. It’s waterproof, it doesn’t burn my eyes, it glides on super easily, and it makes eyes (and lashes) look fuller without looking lined. This technique is great for a super natural look. About $14.50 at MAC counters in department stores.

Compare Prices

Best Lip Gloss: Fusion Beauty Lipfusion Infatuation

While this is advertised as a lip gloss and a lip plumper, my lips never seem fuller after using it. Nevertheless, it still looks really pretty on and it comes in vibrant colors while smelling sweet. Plus, it tickles your lips, which I love! I have around 50 lip glosses and this is the most fun to wear just because of the way it feels and smells.$29)

Best Big Set of Eyeshadows: Urban Decay's Deluxe Shadow Box

Urban Decay's Deluxe Shadow Box has been a favorite of mine for quite awhile now. It comes with nine awesome colors (Fishnet, Honey, Ransom, Graffiti, Zero, Peace, Shag, Scratch and Underground), which are great for going out, as stage makeup, and just for playing around with (I have spent many an hour with my Urban Decay eye shadows just experimenting). About $38 online or at department stores.

Summer 2011: 15 Hot Hairstyles
Jul 29th 2011, 10:01

Summer's a great time to embrace your natural hair texture. If you have super straight hair, put away your curling iron for the season. If you have curly hair, put away the flat-iron and let your natural curls (and your ponytail) out. Can't stand the kink? Consider a straightening method like the Japanese or the uber-controversial Brazilian Blowout (find out what happens when my good friend Alison Brower gets one). The results are gorgeous and rather long-lasting.

We love the ponytail and why not? These days you can wear them to the gym then later that evening to a five-star restaurant. They look adorable on short hair (little kid barrettes are fun, even when you're 30) and sexy on long, layered hair. "Done" hairstyles are so 1980s, thank goodness, because who has time for perfection when there's the Internet to surf, the kids to feed and the beach to walk on? Here, we rundown 10 great ponytails and how to style them.

Shampoo Additives
Jul 28th 2011, 10:01

Wander down an aisle in any drugstore and you will see a non-ending selection of shampoos. How do you choose which one is right for you? What makes one better than the next? Most people look at the cost. Does this tell you anything? And fragrance is a close second. If it smells wonderful, then it must work? Lastly, the amount of bubbles that it produces... does this make for a good shampoo? You are probably shaking your head right now but, unfortunately, these are the attributes that most people look for in a good shampoo.

The first mistake that I find is that a lot of people think shampoos will produce miracles. Unfortunately that won't happen. While shampoos might effectively clean your hair, they won't cure split ends, straighten your curl, or suddenly give you bouncy, shiny hair. So, are we wasting our money? In some cases, we probably are. We sometimes forget what a shampoo is supposed to do -- clean your hair -- plain and simple. The additives below will only work if your hair is in good condition to begin with.

In many instances an inexpensive shampoo can clean your hair effectively and, if you add your own little touches to their contents, as have the ladies below, they will often work just as well. We sometimes forget that generations long gone washed their hair, just as we are doing, and they didn't have the choices we have today, they made their own, just as we are beginning to do.

You don't have to go back very far to see the truth in this. In the 1870's, hair salons in Britain, were formulating their own shampoos from varying amounts of water, soda and bar soap. While these solutions were being used in Britain, an American, by the name of John Breck, was spending all of his spare time trying to formulate the perfect shampoo to cure his baldness. While he didn't solve his problem, he was successful in formulating a detergent-based shampoo that we are all familiar with today. And, as they say... the rest is history.

I recently found that several ladies who frequent our site are adding their own ingredients to their shampoo. Here is a peek at some of the ingredients that are being added.

  • I have made a strong rosemary leaves tea solution and added the strained solution to my shampoo for added shine and color ( brown hair). Chamomile is good for blondes. Natima
  • I have added tea tree oil to my shampoo to get rid of flakes -- it works! Usually, I will pour a dollop of shampoo into my palm, then add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil, mix them together, then shampoo it in! If I do this once a week (sometimes less) I can keep flakes away...it also helps get rid of styling buildup. Medusa
  • I have tried a bit of vodka mixed in with my shampoo. It somehow makes your hair shiny. Devie
  • I mixed a raw egg into my shampoo. I heard that it will strengthen your hair. So far, so good. Tina

Beauty: What's Hot Now: Oil Blotting Sheets

Oil Blotting Sheets
Jul 28th 2011, 10:01

I have an oily t-zone and within 10 minutes of eating anything remotely fried my forehead becomes slick and shiny. While I've been known to dab my forehead with paper napkins (very satisfying in a vaguely unsettling way), the much more sophisticated approach is to use blotting sheets.

Not only do they magically soak up facial oils while leaving your makeup (foundation, powder) intact, they are a much smarter option than paper napkins and powdering your forehead every hour (which leaves you looking like a mime as the day wears on, I think).

I'm partial to Clinique's sheets, but I hear great things about Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets.

Check out this full list to find blotting sheets in your price range.

Beauty: What's Hot Now: Types of Perfume

Types of Perfume
Jul 26th 2011, 10:01

Once upon a time, a woman was expected to have a signature scent. Nowadays, we are more likely to treat fragrance as an accessory, changing our perfume daily - or even more often - to suit our busy lives and shifting moods.

But sometimes, too much choice can lead to confusion. If you're like most women, you have multiple perfume bottles cluttering your vanity table. They taunt you every morning as you get dressed, with the simple yet silent demand, "Who do you want to be today?"

To help you cut through the clutter, we've created this brief guide to the major fragrance categories, with suggestions for where to wear each one.

Citrus

Infused with the tangy essence of citrus fruits, these perfumes are lively and energetic. They are best enjoyed as a daytime delight, just the thing to wake you up in the morning before you've had that second coffee. Wear a citrus perfume to meet your girlfriends for brunch, brighten a baby shower, or ride your bicycle to the organic market.

See our full list of citrus fragrances including Clinique Happy, Burberry Weekend for Women, Cartier Eau de Cartier for Women, Jo Malone Grapefruit, Calvin Klein CK One, The Gap Close

Floral

Sweet and romantic, these scents are the "good girls" of the fragrance aisle. Florals are sometimes single note, but generally combine the scents of various flowers to create a classic feminine appeal. Spritz on a floral when you want to show off (or fake) your sweet-and-girly side -- when meeting your boyfriend's parents comes to mind. These scents are also appropriate at church, the ballet, or your best friend's wedding, especially if you've got your eye on an eligible groomsman.

See our full list of floral fragrances including Chanel No 5, Karl Lagerfeld Chloe, Lancome Tresor and Anna Sui

Fruity

Like a cheerleader with a wicked side, fruity perfumes are fresh and spicy. These fragrances please the nose with the bright and familiar smells of apple, peach, berry, mango and other juicy fruits, often blended with florals to create a compelling aroma. Pretty without being overwhelming, these perfumes are ideal for a movie-and-dinner first date. Just apply sparingly.

See our full list of fruity fragrances including Liz Claiborne by Liz Claiborne, Avon Fire Me Up, Harajuku Lovers Lil' Angel, Ralph Lauren Ralph Wild, Marc Jacobs Splash: Apple 2010, Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Now 2010

Green

Smelling of fresh leaves and newly-mown grass, the green fragrances are a natural and energetic group. These scents tend toward the unisex, so are best left on the shelf when you're dressing to impress a hot date. Save them for daytime instead, when their sporty, modern appeal makes them a great fit for any casual or outdoor gathering. Wear one to cheer on your favorite football team, at the golfing range, or on a flea market amble with friends.

See our full list of green fragrances including Chanel No. 19, Ralph Lauren Safari, Escada Sport Country Weekend, Sung Alfred Sung, Escada Magnetism, Adidas Adrenaline Woman

Oceanic

Oceanic perfumes are a modern invention, first appearing with Christian Dior's Dune in 1991. These scents use a blend of synthetic compounds to evoke natural aromas such as mountain air, ocean spray or clean linen. Crisp and fresh, they are an ideal choice for job interviews, when you want your perfume to say, "I'm clean, efficient and won't stink up the joint if hired."

See our full list of oceanic fragrances including EChristian Dior Dune, Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers, Davidoff Cool Water Woman, Giorgio Beverly Hills Ocean Dream

Oriental

Think of oriental perfumes as the fragrance equivalent of cleavage and a killer pair of stilettos. Exotic and distinctly feminine, these sensual blends feature an earthy, animalistic base scent such as musk or ambergris, often combined with warm notes such as amber. (When combined with florals, these scents are called "florientals"). The effect is a bold yet mysterious perfume that makes a big entrance, tosses back a few martinis, and leaves with phone numbers in her pocket. Wear one when you want to seduce, whether it's a third date or just a rare night out without the kids.

See our full list of oriental fragrances including Elizabeth Taylor Black Pearls, Yves Saint Laurent Opuim, Guerlain Shalimar, Givenchy Organza, Yves Saint Laurent Opium, Versace Crystal Noir

Spicy

Sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what these perfumes smell like. Uncap one and be transported to your mom's kitchen - if your mom was the type who baked cinnamon rolls and gingerbread from scratch. With notes of cloves, ginger, cinnamon, cardamon and pepper, spicy perfumes are comforting and alluring in an old-fashioned way. Wear one to your next parent-teacher meeting, or at lunch with that handsome officemate who you wouldn't mind sharing pastry with.

See our full list of spicy fragrances including Chanel Coco, Jo Malone Vetyver, BCBG Girls, Givenchy Ysatis, Estee Lauder Cinnabar

Woody (Chypre)

Woody scents are built on base notes of bark and moss, conjuring winding forest paths. While more unisex than other fragrance categories, that's not to say these scents are masculine. They evoke a particular brand of no-nonsense femininity. Think Marion in Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Katharine Hepburn in any movie. This strong and classic appeal translates well to the corporate office, too. Wear one to your next performance review.

See our full list of woodsy fragrances including Estee Lauder Knowing, Chanel No. 19, Britney Spears Believe, Ralph Lauren Romance, Gucci Envy Me
