One of the hot new topics around the color bowl is the introduction of the INOA Color line by L'oreal Professional, a new ammonia free hair color.
Why Ammonia Free?
Ammonia is used to open the hair's cuticle, allowing the color molecules to enter the hair shaft. The downside of ammonia is that it smells terrible and can be irritating to your more sensitive clients. Plus, daily exposure could have negative effects on the stylists that are working with these products.
L'oreal Professional claims to have the answer to this problem and has recently unveiled INOA, which stands for Innovation No Ammonia. INOA offers thorough grey coverage by developing color molecules that are attracted to the water inside the hair shaft. They essentially force themselves through the hairs cuticle, banishing the need for ammonia.
L'oreal says that hair is left as smooth as it was before coloring and that they look forward to damaging hair color becoming a thing of the past.
Does Ammonia Free Hair Color Already Exist?
There has been ammonia free hair color on the market for awhile. Several color lines carry a demi-permanent color that is ammonia free, but this type of color only blends grey and you do not get full or lasting coverage.
Another ammonia free color line is Organic Color Systems, made by Herb UK. This color line uses an oil based color that is propelled into the hair shaft with the assistance of heat which opens the hair cuticle. It has been available in the states since 2002 but it hasn't picked up much mainstream interest, only being carried in roughly 1500 salons nation wide.
Time will tell to see if L'oreal can get the masses on board with ammonia free hair color. Getting rid of noxious and damaging chemicals sounds good to me and advertising this service can be a great way to get new clients into your salon.
