"The Birds" Halloween Costume

A good friend dressed up as Tippi Hedren in "The Birds" for Halloween years ago and it was my all-time favorite Halloween costume since.

Here's how to get this look:

You'll need to buy a few birds at a crafts store. Spray paint them black.

If you don't have blonde hair, then get a wig. You'll want one that fits into the 60s-era, which is when this film came out. Muss up the blonde wig so it looks as if you've been attacked by birds.

If you have blonde hair, style it into a classic French twist, then muss it up so it appears you've been attacked by birds.

You'll want a prim suit in any pastel color. Add pearls and proper white gloves. You'll need sensible black shoes and a sensible circa-60s purse. Think Jackie O.

Apply appropriate classic makeup. A nice red lip and false eyelashes will add glamour.

Now here's where the fun begins. You need to muss up your hair and your makeup with fake blood. The idea is that you've been attacked by black birds.

Pin a couple of the birds in your hair with fake blood dripping out of their mouths and onto your hair.

Pin a few birds along your dress in various places. Make sure you apply blood on your clothes to correspond with the bird "bites."

Carry cigarettes and a proper cigarette holder.

Are You Tweezing Your Brows Correctly?

I've gotten better at this over the years, but one of my biggest beauty pet peeves is a bad brow. I still get distracted talking to friends who have a bunch of stray hairs either under or above the natural shape of their arch, and in college I once made my British friend Abigail subject to my set of tweezers. Once I did my job, there was no going back; Abigail saw what a difference a cleaned-up brow made and over the years she made sure to comment on the bang-up job she was doing on herself.

There are a few rules to follow when grooming your own brows, but I strongly recommend you get a professional job first and then use the "blueprint" as your guide to keep brows groomed. Learn many more tips in my article, "How To Shape Your Eyebrows."

Smell Like Alexa Chung

I have a huge girl crush on British "It Girl" and trendsetter Alexa Chung because of her effortless style and because she stands out among other women in her peer group who all look the same to me with their long, beachy waves and their overuse of the word, "like."

Alexa was recently the guest editor of a new blog I recently discovered, "WhoWhatWear.com," and she mentioned her favorite fragrance is La Labo's Santal 33 ($145).

"I hate overly powerful, floral perfumes," Chung says in the article. "This one is a subtle, more masculine one I adore. I also have their candle in the same scent [Santal 26 ($70)] burning in my house because I think it's nice to have a signature scent."

So there you have it. If you want to smell like one of the hottest trendsetters today, you've got the scoop. You can find La Labo in boutiques or Buy Le Labo direct from the merchant.

Hairstyles 2011

Perhaps the hottest hairstyle of 2011, Jennifer Aniston's angled long bob looks great on all face shapes.

Here's why it works on everyone: This cut softens a defined chin so often seen on heart-shaped faces; it plays down the roundness on a round face; and, it isn't too long to draw down a long face.

So how to make sure your hairstylist mimics this hairstyle exactly? Follow these directions:

  • Bring a picture. Just explaining this haircut may not work (although I didn't bring in a picture, and my stylist Kazuo Suzuki at Eva Scrivo Salon did a brilliant job giving me this cut last week).
  • "Ask for piecey layers that are longer in the front," says hairstylist Matt Fugate in this month's Allure magazine.
  • Tell your stylist you want the back 1 1/2 inches shorter than in the front.
  • Explain that the ends need to be slightly wispy (achieved with a razor).

'Desperate' Looks

Society has come a long way now that TV's hottest stars are (gulp!) over 40. Finally Hollywood has learned what many of us have known all along: Women are sexy at any age. Since 'Desperate Housewives' came out, America has been transfixed. So how do these women manage to look so hot at 30, 40 and older? We've collected all their beauty bits and pieces from TV, magazines and more and here we share them with you.

Teri Hatcher's beauty secrets. US Weekly reports the secret to Teri's look is the old adage, 'less is more.' Since Teri is 40, less makeup makes her look fresher. Her makeup artist and hairstylist, Don Malot, adds a luminescent liquid to her foundation to make her skin 'dewy and glowy.' He also uses a brown shadow with shimmer to make Hatcher's brown eyes stand out.

How to get her hair. Although Hatcher has naturally wavy hair and wore soft curls on the red carpet the night she won the Golden Globe, she prefers it straight. Since even wavy hair can look flat (and flat, straight hair is not 'in' at the moment), Malot gives it extra body by applying Redken Spray Starch to damp strands before drying Hatcher's hair straight.

How to look 30 when you're 40. Hatcher has grown out her hair since she sported short hair in 1986, which is a great tip for those of you over 40: don't go for short-short hair or over-coiffed do's. Instead, opt for a shoulder-length shag with layers. Avoid the blunt cuts.

Plastic Surgery: Has she or hasn't she? The UK's Daily Mail puts Hatcher under the plastic surgery microscope. Experts debate whether she's had an under-eye lift (Hatcher tends to have baggy eyes), Botox and a nose job. Hatcher admitted to using Botox on Oprah in April, 2006. See photos from then and now and then judge for yourself.

Eva Longoria's beauty secrets. Longoria, the only star on the show under 40 (she's 31) tells Us Weekly, "I don't overdo the hair and makeup." Like Hatcher, she knows the secret to looking young is to not pile on the makeup. Instead, Longoria adds color to her dark looks by adding a bit of gold shimmer cream from Girlactik to her cheeks & forehead.

How to look 20 when you're 30. Do highlight your best features. Longoria, for example, shows off her legs, not her cleavage. If it's your eyes, play them up. If you have full lips, show them off with a gloss or dare to go red. Don't use a thick concealer, it will settle into fine lines highlighting your flaws. For a dewy glow, try Longoria's favorite foundation, Laura Mercier Foundation .

Marcia Cross's beauty secrets. More than the other stars on the show, Cross is known for her porcelain complexion. How does she keep her skin so gorgeous at 43? Us Weekly reports Cross uses the ultra-luxe and super-hydrating Creme de la Mer to keep her skin soft. She then applies a creamy foundation and tops it all off with a pressed powder. For lips, she uses glosses by Dessert Beauty (try Desserts Deliciously Kissable Plumping Lip Gloss in Dreamy.

Want Cross's hair on 'Housewives'? Newsweek reports that when Cross showed for the photos for the magazine's article in late 2004, she balked when asked to pose as Bree Van Der Kamp. It seems Cross didn't want to pose in her character's trademark 'do, the flip that has helped make her famous. But if you want the look it's easy to do, simply blow dry your hair straight but flip the bottom up with a round, steel brush. The aluminum barrel on these brushes rely on the heat and act as a curling iron for your hair.

Nicollette Sheridan's beauty secrets. Us Weekly reports Sheridan treats her face to monthly customized Super Performance Facial Treatments ($200 a pop) at L.A.'s Jim Wayne salon. These facials help treat her skin (which is dry & sensitive according to her facialist, Octavia Ellington). As for her hair, Jim Wayne cuts her trademark blonde locks in long layers for a 'young, sexy, hot look,' he tells Us. The makeup artists on 'Housewives' use pink tones on the actress, who is reportedly a 'gloss maven' and prefers Jessica Simpson's Dessert beauty line.

Has Sheridan or hasn't Sheridan? Whether or not Sheridan has gone under the knife has been under debate for years. Her post-Knots Landing face drew notice from gossip columnist Liz Smith, who dubbed it 'startlingly exotic' & 'a little transgendered-esque.' Sheridan immediately fought back with a statement that called Smith's allegations, 'malicious and patently false rumors… sprung whole cloth from ... feverish, overactive and inaccurate imaginations.' She even had plastic surgeon Frank Ryan examine her face without finding a single scar.

The Benefits of Dry Brushing; Plus, Make Your Own Body Scrub

If you suffer from dry skin in the winter, you might consider dry brushing your skin before you shower. "If you dry-brush on a daily basis, you'll probably notice a difference within a week--especially if you follow it with moisturizer," says Vivianne Varcia-Tunon of ESPA spas in Allure magazine.

You can follow the dry brushing with a homemade body scrub. Simply combine 2 parts sugar (or salt) and 1 part oil (any oil in your kitchen will work -- even olive oil, but I prefer extra virgin coconut oil), and massage into skin in a circular motion. Rinse off in the tub. I have more detailed directions on homemade scrubs How to Make Salt and Sugar Scrubs.

How to Exfoliate

As we age, cell turnover slows down and dead skin cells can give us a dull complexion. Exfoliating both the face and body weekly helps get rid of the dead top layers of skin. This allows moisturizers and serums to better penetrate the skin and helps your foundation glide on smoothly instead of sitting atop flaky skin (yuuuuck).

The Best Tools for Exfoliation

Forget those fluffy nylon bath things you get with a bottle of body wash. And throw out that bacteria-infested loofah, which is too abrasive on most of your skin, anyway. Instead, consider the basic washcloth your best friend when it comes to exfoliating both your face and your body.

Other great tools for exfoliation: A dry brush and exfoliating gloves.

When I was growing up my family had a brush hanging in the shower for years and no one used it. The long handle was wooden and on the end was a soft brush. Because wood is not meant to be stored in wet places, the brush slowly accumulated mildew, but no one threw it away because it was a gift from our Austrian relatives. It was like a disgusting piece of bathroom art.

Years later I found out the brush is meant to be used before a bath to exfoliate the body. You simply give yourself a good dry-brushing from feet on up and then wash off in the shower. Just be sure to keep it outside the bath or shower.

I love the gloves. I use them to scrub my skin in a circular motion. Nothing works better, in my opinion.

Treat Yourself to an At-home Body Scrub

As a beauty writer, I've had dozens of professional body scrubs. While nothing beats the scrubs done at Korean spas found in big cities, I find professional body scrubs in your average spa to be disappointing. Why spend $150 to do what you can achieve in your own shower for a fraction of the price using a dry brush and a body scrub?

Marcia Kilgore, the founder of Bliss Spas, shared this excellent step-by-step instruction for the perfect weekly body exfoliation in the book, "Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor."

  1. Apply oil to skin
  2. Take a dry brush to skin from the feet up, brushing in short, light strokes
  3. Step in the shower and using a sugar or salt scrub start at the feet again and massage the skin in a circular motion on up the body. I like to do the massage with exfoliating gloves.
  4. Rinse off using lukewarm water, then apply a salicylic acid body wash to skin, paying more attention to heels, elbows and knees. If you have a tendency towards back and butt acne, make sure to apply there as well.
  5. Pat skin dry and apply a moisturizer while skin is slightly damp.

See my list of the best salt and sugar scrubs or make your own scrubs.

My Best Exfoliating Tips for the Face

Chances are if you don't exfoliate daily or weekly, your skin is covered in dead skin cells that are mucking up the surface of your skin and causing your skin to not only look dull, but older. Without proper exfoliation, foundation won't smooth over your skin cleanly and moisturizer won't properly soak in. Here are my best exfoliating tips for the face:
  • According to Allure Magazine, the best time to exfoliate is in the morning. Apparently, our skin repairs itself at night therefore the morning is the perfect time for scrubbing away those dead skin cells.
  • Exfoliate with a scrub once or twice a week. Don't over-exfoliate or use a product with granules that can tear at the skin. Rub the product in a circular motion for 30 seconds and then rinse off with lukewarm -- never hot -- water. If you have oily skin, large pores or acne-prone skin, you can try an at-home microdermabrasion system.
  • To save time, mix in a dime-size amount of your favorite facial scrub into your cleanser and do it all at once.
  • There are some great scrubs on the market, but a washcloth works (almost) as well and it's more budget-friendly in these recessionary times. Get the full scoop in How to Exfoliate Using a Washcloth.
  • Clarisonic Skincare Brush is one of those rare products that is beloved by most everyone who tries it. Basically a tool for cleansing the face, you use the Clarisonic with your favorite cleanser to deep clean your pores. A great exfoliator, but with a hefty pricetag (up to $200). Read my review of the Clarisonic.

Acids and Retinoids

Take your exfoliating one step further with stronger products. You can exfoliate with microdermabrasion, chemical peels or beta alpha hydroxy pads. Glycolic acid can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Salicylic acids help with facial acne, butt acne and back acne. Retinoids increase cell turnover and also exfoliate the skin (I write about my love for Retin-A at length here).

See my list of the best facial scrubs for the face.

Don't Forget Your Lips

Scaly lips are simply not sexy, but there are times in our lives when we all suffer from it. Luckily, getting rid of scaly lips is a relatively easy fix. Find out how in the article, How to Get Rid of Scaly Lips.

Exfoliation Tip for Your Elbows

I love this tip I got from "Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor." When elbows get rough, you can soften them up with a sock trick. Cut the toes off a clean pair of thick socks, rub Crisco on your elbows and slip the socks over your arms. Either sleep like that for 8 hours or spend the day inside doing, well, nothing. The shortening works wonders on tough spots. In fact, Allure reports this method is used in hospitals to treat eczema.

Fall's Hottest Nail Trends: What's Your Favorite?

There are so many amazing nail options for fall that I can't pick my favorite. Deep down, I love Shellac because it doesn't chip or peel and I tend to be hard on my nails but the problem is there aren't many great colors yet available. If it ever comes in my signature color (Haze by RGB, check it out), I will commit to Shellac. I love this newsprint mani, too, but I'm too lazy to do my own nails. Metallics are hot right now, but the trend is just not me.

In summer, I tend to go lighter on my nails because it looks so great with a tan, but in fall, dark is always chic. You can have fun with colors, like Katherine Powers of "WhoWhatWear.com" did when she painted her nails a bright yellow (see them here). You've got to check out this gorgeous blue from Rescue Beauty Lounge. Swoon! Short, black or deep blue nails remain popular. I know this because trend-setter Alexa Chung's go-to nail polish is Black Satin by Chanel (prefer Chanel's Blue Satin).

Finally, About.com Beauty is on Facebook!

I know I'm embarrassingly late to the game, but I finally have a Facebook fan page, which was just set up and all ready for you to "like." Check it out. It feels a bit lonely on there at the moment because I'm just now getting the word out, so help me out, please, by jumping on my bandwagon.

Every blog post I write will pop on your Facebook page (unless you hide me, which won't happen because I promise to not bore you). I guarantee there's some fun, juicy stuff to come this month alone including Halloween hair and makeup trends, a $650 moisturizer (!!!), the haircut that looks good on everyone, how to apply false eyelashes and much, much more.

My goal with Facebook is to keep you informed on the hottest trends, but also to give you my very best tips and tricks when it comes to makeup, skincare and hair. I'm less interested in what new products are hitting the market and more interested in which ones are tried and true. The same goes for beauty tricks. If it works, trust me, I'll tell you about it. I'll also keep you informed about the outrageous (like that $650 moisturizer).

So go ahead and "like" About.com beauty on Facebook. I promise you won't be disappointed.

At-Home Hair Color: Biggest Mistakes Women Make

I get emails all the time from women who have dyed their own hair platinum blonde or red and want to know how to fix their botched job. My advice is always, "Get thee to a professional." While I'm an advocate of coloring your own hair as long as you're only covering up grays or going no more than 2 shades lighter or darker, if you are going for highlights or aiming for a drastic color change, do NOT attempt to do it on your own.

In my article, At-Home Hair Color: Biggest Mistakes Women Make, I explain all the problems women come across when coloring their own hair at home.
